Analysis of WMD Materials in Waste and Stormwater Infrastructure

Oak Ridge National Laboratory and Mississippi State University
Analysis of WMD Materials in Waste and Stormwater Infrastructures

  • Product Developed: ORNL and MSU have developed a Simulation and Fate (SIMFATE) Model to predict the distribution and fate of a dispersed WMD material in wastewater and stormwater treatment systems.
  • SIMFATE answer critical questions:
    • Where will WMD accumulate?
    • How much will accumulate?
    • Rate of accumulation?
    • Is accumulation reversible?
  • SIMFATE can be applied to:
    • Emergency preparedness
    • Improving infrastructure resilience
    • Event recovery actions
  • SIMFATE links to HPAC and EPA's SWIMM models
    • Initial focus on radioactive materials from Radiological Dispersal Devices
    • Expandable to Chemical and Biological
  • Commercialization of SIMFATE is underway
    • Discussions ongoing with potential commercial partners
    • Technology transfer and copyright options under review
    • Validation exercises with Madison MS proposed
