- Students at Mississippi State University working on a SERRI funded project (Rapid Detection of Agriterrorism via Remote Sensing) won top honors in two international competitions among 2000 entries at the 2008 International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium (IGARSS) held in Boston, MA in July 2008.

- Student at University of Southern Mississippi working on a SERRI funded project (Real-Time Detection of Chemicals and Biological Pathogens in Fluids) earned a student scholarship award for presentation at the Chemical and Biological Defense Physical Science and Technology Conference to be held in New Orleans, LA in November 2008.
- A paper by researchers at the University of Tennessee working on a SERRI funded research project (Data-Sharing Middleware for Information Dissemination among Heterogeneous Sources) was accepted by the IEEE International Conference on Image Processing. The paper was one of 33 papers accepted from a field of 125 received from 22 countries.
